“Should I take the pill?”
Just take the pill.
Take two.
Now.
There is no award
for tolerating pain.
Congratulations,
it’s 2 and you’re up
scrunched
curled
set
And now you have to
move
delirious with sleep and the grip
of half your muscles tense and contracted
to search bags
pop pink pills
sip water
eat the emergency cookies that you placed on the floor by your bed.
You needed to have done that
half an hour ago
at least.
You needed the medicine in your blood, not just entering the body.
And then you wait.
Awake. Half-alive.
We could have done this hours ago, love.
So, new rule.
The next time you’re in pain,
don’t wonder if it hurts enough.
It hurts.
Take the pills.
